From covering receivers to helping with players, Leonard Myers Jr., is now learning the ins and outs of coaching with the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys. Myers has experience with the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and Detroit Lions. The cornerback is a former University of Miami athlete and Fort Lauderdale, FL native. Continue below for more on his experience with the University. 

What attracted you to coaching after the end of your NFL career?
"I've always wanted to positively impact in the lives of players, on and off the field."

How did you find out about the NFLPA Coaching Internship?
"The Trust."

How would you describe your coaching style?
"My coaching technique is very hands on and interactive. I like to create mental challenges to develop overall life skills."

Which aspects of coaching do you find most challenging? Most enjoyable?
"Adjusting to the long hours that I require of myself to be efficient with my work. The highlights consist of moments that allow me to reach into my players' lives and provide options to their obstacles when they hit a brick wall."        
   

After this experience, what advice would you give collegiate players regarding success in the NFL?
"Build positive relationships through integrity, dedication to your craft in all aspects and embrace every moment as an opportunity for growth and not as a setback."

What have you learned or discovered about yourself during your internship?
"I'm not as tough as I was as a player. I'm learning how to grow as a former player. To have the opportunity to pass the ball to the next generation as a coach is a dream come true."

Leonard Myers Jr. is a former NFL cornerback for the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and Detroit Lions. Myers is one of 17 former players in the NFLPA’s Coaching Internship program, and is positioned at New Mexico Highlands University.

The NFLPA Coaching Internship program provides opportunities for former professional football players to gain coaching experience at Division II, Division III, and NAIA universities for a full collegiate football season.
